This is the first comic by Sayman Dowman I've read. His love of short stories shines even in this long form serialised story. This manga shoots 8 page chapters at a machine gun pace, moving from joke-to-joke and character-to-character. You follow several point of views that are all conceded by the location of a mysterious South Pacific island, as well as insanity of the characters. The various genres this comic glides across are lifted by the upbeat comedy turn it into an almost slice-of-life ordeal. The senseless violence and sexuality are contrasted with incredibly endearing interpersonal character development and heart-melting romance of some of the characters. This comic does cross some further barriers than I expect, although manages to be rather progressive in several aspects. Primary one must be the queer representation, the casual existence of queerness across the work of Dowman make me much more favourable towards him. My set of comparisons go from Tarantino to Gregg Araki, always a win. Certainly a wonderful introduction to the universe of Dowman and a nice brisk read by itself.
